Japan is globally recognized for academic excellence, state-of-the-art research laboratories, and safe, vibrant student cities. The Japanese Government MEXT (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship remains one of the world's premier fully funded scholarship schemes for international students.

1. Benefits of the MEXT Scholarship

  • 100% Tuition Waiver: Total exemption from examination fees, matriculation fees, and tuition throughout the duration of study.
  • Round-Trip Airfare: Direct economy-class flights between your home country and Japan at the beginning and conclusion of the scholarship.
  • Monthly Stipend: ¥117,000/month for undergraduates, ¥144,000/month for Master's researchers, and ¥145,000/month for PhD candidates.
  • Japanese Language Training: Free 6 to 12-month preparatory intensive Japanese language course.

2. Embassy vs. University Recommendation Tracks

  • Embassy Track (April–May): Administered directly by the Japanese Embassy in your home country. Involves written examinations (English, Japanese, and mathematics/science) followed by personal interviews.
  • University Track (October–January): Candidates apply directly through partner Japanese universities or by securing prior acceptance from a prospective academic supervisor.

3. Elite Universities Offering English-Taught Programs

  • The University of Tokyo (PEAK): World-class liberal arts and environmental sciences programs.
  • Kyoto University (Kyoto iUP): Comprehensive 4.5-year international undergraduate program with language support.
  • Tokyo Institute of Technology (Institute of Science Tokyo): Cutting-edge engineering, computing, and materials science.
  • Osaka, Nagoya, Kyushu, and Tohoku Universities: Extensive offerings in biomedical science and sustainable engineering.
  • Private Leaders: Keio, Waseda, and Sophia Universities.

4. Student Visa & Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

Once admitted, your host university applies to the Japanese Immigration Services Agency for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Once granted, submit the COE alongside your passport to the Japanese Embassy to obtain your Student Visa within 5 to 7 business days.

5. Living Expenses and Part-Time Work

International students are permitted to work up to 28 hours per week during academic semesters and 40 hours during official university breaks after obtaining a "Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted" at the port of entry. Average living costs range from ¥100,000 to ¥140,000 per month.
