Opportunity Overview

The Al Jazeera Fellowship is a three-month research programme for journalists and researchers that includes a stay at Al Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, with a grant covering travel and accommodation; dates for the 2027 edition have not been announced. Run by the Al Jazeera Media Institute, it has two phases: a remote phase in which fellows submit their research plan and introduction, then a phase at the network's headquarters to complete a paper of about 7,000 words on topics such as journalism in the Global South, digital journalism, fact-checking and AI, and media ethics. Fellows join a newsroom team, use Al Jazeera's archives and library, and meet editors-in-chief. It is open to journalists and researchers (staff or freelance) with a bachelor's degree and at least two years' experience, per the 2026 call; applicants from Arab countries apply to the Arabic track, while the English track is reserved for nationals of non-Arab countries and requires four years' experience and strong academic English. Applications for 2026 opened in November 2025 and closed in December 2025; the call opens once a year in autumn/winter.
