Opportunity Overview

A PhD at the University of Oslo is not a scholarship in the usual sense but a salaried temporary job: PhD candidates are hired as research fellows for three years, or four with teaching duties, and pay no tuition. Faculties, departments and centres advertise these positions all year on UiO's vacancies page, each with its own deadline and requirements. Pay follows the state salary scale (position code 1017); UiO ads in 2025–26, for example, offered NOK 555,000–601,000 a year before tax, with membership of the state pension scheme. You usually need a relevant master's degree with good grades (equivalent to five years of university study); some departments ask non-European applicants for the GRE, and English must be documented with TOEFL or IELTS unless you are exempt. Because PhD candidates are employees rather than students, they are not entitled to student loans or regular student housing, and they come on a skilled-worker residence permit. Admission is also possible with external funding that covers the whole period. Watch the vacancy listings and apply through the link in each ad.

University of Oslo International Summer School (ISS) Scholarships 2027: Tuition, Housing, Meals and Flights

Master

Scholarships to attend a four-week master's-level summer course at the University of Oslo International Summer School (ISS), from 26 June to 24 July 2027; applications run from 4 to 25 January 2027. There are two options: a Basic Fee Scholarship covering tuition and the participation fee, or an ISS Accommodation Scholarship that also covers a shared room in ISS housing, meals and an Oslo travel card. Applicants from Africa, Asia, Latin America and European countries outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland can also ask for return flights to Oslo, while visa fees and airport transfers are not covered. For comparison, a master's course with housing cost about NOK 52,300 in 2026. You must apply for one master's course only in Søknadsweb and tick the 'stipend' option, meet the academic and English requirements, have a strong academic record, and submit the scholarship form, a letter of recommendation showing the relevance of your background, and a CV. Selection weighs academic and professional achievement, geographical distribution, financial need and gender balance. Not eligible: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (except, exceptionally, those living outside that area), permanent residents of Norway, former ISS scholarship holders, US and Canadian citizens (who have separate partial scholarships), and applicants to bachelor's or Norwegian language courses.
