Opportunity Overview
At NTNU, full funding is required for PhD admission, and the usual route is a salaried PhD Candidate position, which the university advertises continuously on its vacancies page. The PhD takes three years full time, with some positions adding a fourth year of duties such as teaching, and includes 30 ECTS of coursework and an independent thesis. PhD candidates are exempt from tuition fees and are paid on the state salary scale for research fellows (position code 1017), stated in each advertisement, with employee rights such as pension and holidays. Positions cover engineering, technology, energy, computer science, natural sciences, medicine, the humanities and social sciences in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Ålesund. You need a strong relevant master's (often with a minimum grade set by each unit) and good English, and each ad has its own deadline. NTNU also offers joint Nordic Five Tech PhDs, and admission is possible with external funding covering the whole period.
