Opportunity Overview
The São Paulo Schools of Advanced Science (SPSAS) are intensive courses of about two weeks funded by FAPESP at universities and institutes in São Paulo state, taught by leading scientists from Brazil and abroad; each school has its own application deadline. They target undergraduate and graduate students in Brazil or abroad who are potential candidates for master’s, PhD or postdoctoral positions in São Paulo, and recent PhDs may also be accepted; participants present their research in poster sessions. Organisers set the funding for each school, and travel and accommodation are often covered for some selected participants — for example, the 2025 school on disordered systems selected 80 students and offered extra funds for the travel and local expenses of master’s and PhD students from South America and the rest of the world. Upcoming schools include nonlinear and quantum photonics at UNICAMP (16–27 November 2026), electrochemistry at USP (2–11 December 2026), and schools on glycobiology and solar activity with dates to be set. Follow the upcoming-schools page and apply through each school’s website.
