Opportunity Overview

Scholarships from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI) for foreign students taking a master's (Laurea Magistrale), an AFAM arts or music course, a PhD or a supervised research project at Italian universities and institutions. The award is €10,800 for 9 months (paid in three instalments) plus health and accident insurance; many universities also waive tuition fees for scholars. There is also a 3-month Italian language award (Italofonia, €3,600). You must be a citizen of a country on the official beneficiary list. The 2026–2027 call closed on 26 March 2026; the 2027–2028 call has not been announced yet and usually opens in the spring.

Health and accident insurance

A MAECI group policy covers illness and accidents (pre-existing conditions and dental care excluded).

Possible tuition waiver

Many Italian universities waive tuition for MAECI scholars; check with your university. Regional taxes remain payable.

Eligibility & Acceptance Criteria

5 Criteria
Citizenship of a country on the MAECI beneficiary list (published with each call on the Study in Italy portal); you may apply through one country only.
Maximum age at the deadline: 28 for master's, AFAM and Italofonia; 30 for PhD; 40 for research projects.
Language: B2 in Italian or English (matching the course language) for master's and AFAM; A2 Italian for the language course; no certificate required for PhD or research.
Master's applicants need a degree equivalent to an Italian bachelor's (Laurea triennale); PhD applicants need an admission letter (pre-admission is not accepted).
Not eligible: bachelor's degrees, university masters (Master universitario), part-time or 'fuori corso' students, and holders of an Italian higher-education degree.
