Opportunity Overview

The Google PhD Fellowship supports outstanding PhD students doing research in computer science and related fields, such as machine learning, algorithms, security, systems and human–computer interaction. Fellowships are offered in Africa, Australia/New Zealand, Canada/US, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, and each fellow is paired with a Google research mentor. Funding varies by region: for example US$15,000 for up to 3 years in Africa, US$15,000 a year in Latin America, US$10,000 a year in Southeast Asia, and a country-dependent bursary in Europe and the Middle East. Students cannot apply directly: their university nominates them. The 2026 cycle ran from 5 March to 30 April 2026; the 2027 cycle has not been announced and is expected around March 2027.

Eligibility & Acceptance Criteria

Enrolled full-time in a PhD programme at an eligible university in one of the programme regions, researching computer science or a related field.
Nominated by your university (each university has a limited number of nominations); direct applications from students are not accepted.
Strong research record and a clear research proposal aligned with Google's research areas.

The University of Newcastle (Australia) awards the International Excellence Scholarship automatically to international full-fee-paying students admitted to an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework programme in 2027.
