Examples of 2026-27 undergraduate tuition from official websites (per year): • Harvard $62,226 (total with housing and food $91,634). • Penn $65,670 (total $94,582) — MIT $66,720 — Stanford $67,731 — Princeton $68,140 (budget $94,624). • Johns Hopkins $68,670 — Dartmouth $71,697 — Yale $72,500 — Columbia $72,800 — Cornell $73,946 — Amherst $75,330. • UC Berkeley (public) for international students: $57,484 in tuition and fees, about $93,944 with campus housing. Aid: Princeton, Amherst, Dartmouth and Bowdoin admit international students need-blind and meet their demonstrated need; Columbia, Cornell, Penn and Caltech meet admitted students’ need but are need-aware in admission. The average international award at Amherst in 2025-26 was over $84,000. Public universities such as Berkeley give no need-based aid to international students.

Working while studying

• During studies: on-campus work up to 20 hours a week in term and 40 hours during breaks; off-campus work only through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) after one full academic year. • After graduation: Optional Practical Training (OPT) for 12 months, plus a 24-month extension for STEM graduates working for an E-Verify employer. • Note: a rule proposed on 8 October 2026 would charge schools $70,000 for a first OPT recommendation and $30,000 for a STEM extension; it is only a proposal and current rules still apply. • Changing from F-1 to an H-1B work visa inside the US is exempt from the $100,000 H-1B fee.
