JET Programme 2027: Paid Teaching and Exchange in Japan

About the program

The JET Programme is run by the Japanese government to employ graduates from participating countries as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIR) in Japanese schools and local governments. Pay starts at about ¥4,020,000 in year one and rises to ¥4,260,000 in year three under the 2026 guidelines, with return flights to Tokyo. Contracts last one year and can be renewed for up to three years (five for exceptional performers). Applicants apply through the Japanese embassy in their country, which must take part in the programme, and need a bachelor's degree by arrival; CIR posts require strong Japanese. Application dates vary by country (for example, the US closes on 13 November 2026). Participation of Arab countries is not confirmed: in 2020 the Japanese embassy in Jordan accepted CIR applications only. Check with the Japanese embassy in your country.
