Study guide

The study system

Higher education in Sweden complies with the European Bologna system: • Bachelor's Degree (Kandidatexamen): 3 years (180 ECTS credits). • Master's Degree: 1-year Master (Magisterexamen - 60 ECTS) or 2-year Master (Masterexamen - 120 ECTS), the premier track qualifying for PhD research. • Doctoral Degree (Doktorsexamen): 4 years (240 ECTS); PhD positions in Sweden are treated as fully salaried employment with competitive monthly salaries and national social security benefits. The academic year begins in late August/early September (Autumn semester) and concludes in June (Spring semester), emphasizing interactive group seminars and critical thinking.

How to get admitted

1) Centralised Application Portal (UniversityAdmissions.se): • Applications to all Swedish universities are lodged via one unified national admissions portal. • Primary Autumn Round: Opens in mid-October and closes on 15 January, with supporting documents and application fee (900 SEK) deadline on 1 February. 2) Academic Requirements: • Bachelor's: Recognized secondary diploma meeting specific course requirements in mathematics and sciences. • Master's: Accredited Bachelor's degree fulfilling program-specific prerequisites (Specific Entry Requirements). • English proficiency: IELTS Academic 6.5 (minimum 5.5 in each section) or TOEFL iBT 90+, fulfilling the Swedish English 6 course equivalent. 3) Major Swedish Scholarships: • Swedish Institute (SI) Scholarships for Global Professionals: 100% tuition coverage, monthly living allowance of 12,000 SEK, travel grant of 15,000 SEK, and health insurance for selected partner countries. • University Global Merit Scholarships (Lund, Uppsala, Stockholm, KTH) offering 25% to 100% tuition fee reductions.
