The study system

• Degree Structure: Bachelor's degrees take 4 to 5 years (5 years for Engineering & Pharmacy; 5 academic years + 2 foundation training years for Medicine 5+2); Master's degrees take 2 to 3 years with coursework and thesis; Doctoral degrees (PhD) span 3 to 5 years of independent research. • University Ecosystem: 1) Major Public State Universities (27 public universities led by Cairo University, Ain Shams, Alexandria, and Mansoura). 2) Al-Azhar University (historic flagship institution for Islamic jurisprudence, Arabic language, and medical/scientific faculties). 3) Modern National Non-Profit Universities (Alamein International, Galala, King Salman, and New Mansoura). 4) Private & International Universities (AUC, GUC, and British University in Egypt). 5) Specialized Science & Technology Hubs (Zewail City and Egypt-Japan University E-JUST). • Medium of Instruction: English is the primary language for Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering, and Computer Science/AI. Humanities, Law, and Social Sciences are primarily taught in Arabic, with specialized English and French tracks. • The academic year commences in late September/early October across two semesters, with optional summer terms under the credit-hour system.

How to get admitted

1) "Study in Egypt" (EGYAID) Central Portal: The unified official Ministry of Higher Education platform for international student admissions into all public universities and higher institutes. Applications typically open in May and run through mid-September. 2) Al-Azhar International Students Portal: Direct applications for Al-Azhar University faculties and Islamic Envoy institutes coordinated via Egyptian embassies, cultural bureaus, and Al-Azhar's admissions office. 3) Direct Institutional Admission: For private, national, and research universities (AUC, GUC, E-JUST, Zewail City) directly through their respective university admissions portals. 4) Required Documentation: • Authenticated secondary school certificate (or equivalent) attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Egyptian Embassy. • Valid international passport (minimum 6 months validity). • Authenticated birth certificate and medical clearance report. • English proficiency certificate (IELTS / TOEFL) for international tracks and private institutions.
